Buörrie båhtieme/ Welcome to Vaartoe - Centre for Sami Research

Buörrie båhtieme! Vaartoe means "mountain with miles-wide view" in south Sami language and is Centre for Sami research south Sami name. Vaartoe also symbolize how we work here at the centre, by promoting interdisciplinary and transboundary research we strive to deepen and widen Sami research at Umeå University.

Vaartoe initiate and coordinate research in Sápmi, on Sami culture, society, history and language. Vaartoe is a node for doctoral students and researchers from different disciplines within the university. In collaboration with Sami organizations, associations and actors we create a positive research environment were creative meetings and different perspectives enriches research.
Head of the centre is Patrik Lantto, and assistant head of the centre is Görel Sandström.
